Abstract

Sur has been approached from a very early date from different areas of knowledge; in our case it is a question of knowing the place given to the images starting from the concept of illustrated magazine and how that being “illustrated” it took to assign a prominent space to the modern photography. We present Victor Delhez, recognized as an engraver but only known by a few as a photographer. Nevertheless, in the first numbers of Sur he fulfilled a role that placed him next to some of the representatives of the new photography in Latin America, like Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Agustín Jiménez, besides Horacio Coppola. This article also deals with the set of photographs and collages refotografiados published in Sur and analyzes its work with the photographs of the book of Karl Blossfeldt, Urformen der Kunst, in its French edition of 1929. Likewise, if we recognize that there is a clear syntax in the magazine that separates essays and notes, organizing the former hierarchically by the use of diverse resources, the same can be said in the case of Delhez’s photography. Sur gave relevance to his photograph in quantitative terms but also valued them as a result of the action of a modern photographer capable of illustrating a text but also, and above all, of proposing a narrative structure based on his photographs.
