Abstract

The popular weekly Caras y Caretas (1898-1939) was the first illustrated magazine that reached a mass audience and was innovative in communicative terms as in its pages converged a miscellany of content and textual genres along with various graphic forms of visual communication. News, interventions or positioning related to art were frequent, and if it was the editors’ intention to set themselves up as shapers of taste or aesthetic values, this had to be negotiated with the various social sectors that consumed the magazine. As illustrated journal, it contributed to extend and spread a graphic culture, promoting technologies and dissemination of images in an unprecedented proportion. Caras y Caretas set then, both in their textual and visual forms,  artistic ideas that articulated the arts with other modalities, including the graphics and multiple forms of visual culture. This work intends then, to relieve the representations of artists and their productions, the art and the artistic field conformation in the discursive and visual context of the early years of  Caras y Caretas. This perspective is articulated with the regard of the magazine as a device and its particular intermediality with the tools that are provided by the cultural history discipline.
