II International Conference on Latin American Cultural Magazines Studies
to be held jointly by the Universidad Nacional de San Martín, TAREA-IIPC
and the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, MALBA
May 8-9, 2018
Papers in motion
Magazines and International Networks in
Latin America’s Artistic Modernity
Commissioned articles, extensive correspondences, post mailings, international
manifestos, long-distance collaborations, letters 'from' different places, crossborder debates: magazines are the ideal support for the movement of ideas,
and the conception of projects from different latitudes. They are printed in one
city, but they collect maps of ideas and intellectual connections that exceed
specific localities. They measure the distance between originals and copies, edit
or eliminate collaborations, they generate debates that continue in other issues
of the same magazine or in other publications. A magazine, its pages in motion,
hanging from a string – this could be the exact image to describe that moment
of 'browsing through' a magazine and the dynamics of ideas generated within
the publication.
Mobility is a notion that refers not only to verifiable movements (of people, of
magazines) but also to the friction generated by the coexistence of diverse
ideas. Since the end of the 20th century the concept of "mobility" has
condensed a prominent interdisciplinary agenda in the social sciences, with
many scholars even referring to a new mobilities paradigm (Sheller and Urry
2006; Faist 2013). It is not limited to apprehending the movements that
characterize the contemporary world, but allows an understanding of how
movement has become significant in the intellectual field. In our case, we wish
to consider the new dimensions that the study of cultural magazines can bring
to the theoretical turn proposed by the new mobilities paradigm. The
permanent movement of contemporary society was, in this sense, already
present the long twentieth century.
Magazines are a privileged support for the circulation of ideas in the field of art.
In their pages interconnections are shaped, notions of fixed identities are
questioned, an active reception and the imagery of distance and proximity are
activated, programs and values are spread, and communities are created.
The purpose of this conference is to focus on the study of the international
communities that are created through magazines, as well as the networks that
their circulation produced. The world in the magazines and the magazines in
the world. We will examine the international sections of journals (i.e., "Letters
to the Editors"), the articles signed by collaborators from different countries,
transnational manifestos, cross-border discussions, and all the different
vibrations of the world through pages of these publications.
Sheller, Mimi, and John Urry. 2006. “The New Mobilities Paradigm.” Environment
and Planning A 38: 207–226.
Faist, Thomas. 2013. “The Mobility Turn: A New Paradigm for the Social Sciences?”
Ethnic and Racial Studies 36 (11): 1637–1646.
The subjects are organized around the following issues:
① Magazines as transnational case studies. Aesthetic programs, format,
periodization.
② Discussions and debates. Agendas, actors and issues.
③ International cartographies. Partners, strategies of exchange, structures of
information.
④ Magazines as scenarios for political intervention. Agendas, agents, and
political formations. Magazines as scenarios of the aesthetic debates during the
Cold War.
⑤ Magazines as objects. Programs behind their creation and reasons for their
dissolution. Agents and contexts of enunciation.
⑥ Comparative studies. Fundaments for comparison in the study of periodical
publications. Contact zones and simultaneities.
While these axes can serve as a general guideline, proposals focusing on topics that
are not among those proposed here will not be excluded. Panels will be organized
on the basis of the received papers.
